To train all staff involved in the management and implementation of the Legionella control program for the client, through addressing issues that surround Legionnaires’ Disease, Legionella bacteria and the management of water systems in accordance with Legislation

INTENDED FOR

This course has been designed for those involved in water system hygiene control (whatever their input) or users of water systems that can become exposed to aerosol created from them.

AIMS / OBJECTIVES

To provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of their responsibilities for
controlling water systems to prevent and control the growth of Legionella bacteria, through discussing the following:

  • Hot and cold water systems and knowledge on the risk of Legionella
  • Clinical Aspects
  • Obligations and importance of compliance with legislation, HSA Guidance and ACoP L8 - HSG 274 Part 2
  • Procedures to control Legionella bacteria risks

Attendees will acquire skills and knowledge in

  • Hot and cold water testing and monitoring
  • Flushing methodology
  • Medical and legal aspects
  • Documentation of control procedures
  • Risk systems and design standards to control/ prevent growth of Legionella bacteria

COURSE CONTENTS

  • Know how legionella bacteria enter water systems and how we may contract Legionnaires disease.
  • Understand legionella bacteria.
  • Know legionella illnesses / symptoms / susceptibility.
  • Know routes of transmission
  • Understand pneumonia and legionella’s impact within the lung
  • Know conditions that legionella favour for proliferation.
  • Understand aerosol generation.
  • Know the basics behind ACOP L8 and HSG 274.
  • Know the importance of the management pathway
  • Know the basics behind legionella risk assessment.
  • Know the importance of the written scheme.
  • Know the systems that represent a reasonably foreseeable risk.
  • Know inspection / monitoring of hot and cold-water systems.
